Brandon Kidwell
Recently I have been exploring the use of double exposure in my personal photography work and reached out to Brandon Kidwell, who uses double exposures for both his personal work and clients such as CORE AUTOSPORT and OMEGA, to learn more about the photography style and how I can apply it in my own work.
1. How did you start with your double exposure work, what was your learning process? I started with double exposures long ago with old simple point and shoot film cameras. I always loved it when they were developed especially when on accident. Later when I became more serious about photography, I learned to create them with purpose and intention.
2. What is your general set up? When you are making your own creative pieces what is your thought process? My current setup is a Canon 5D Mark III. This camera, though digital, provides the ability to expose over a previously captured image at a later date so you can plan your creations. Other cameras include Fuji mirrorless and Pentax Medium Format but those require instant back to back captures so those are more for spontaneous art.
3. Are your edits in camera, retouching afterwards or a mix of both? My personal work is mostly in camera. My client work is generally post processed but shot as if it was in camera. Clients tend to ask for changes so flexibility is key. I am comfortable with portraiture, light and my equipment so my thought process is always what is the story or emotion I want to capture. Sometimes my thoughts are focused on capturing a person or event and adding depth or narrative with the second image.
4. What has been your favourite personal work and why? My favourite works are any of my family. They represent moments for me, and I remember them like a summer song, and I can reminisce those times with all my senses when I experience those images.
